Over the last six months as I've been networking at meetings across the San Francisco Bay Area and in Sacramento, I've built up a portfolio of policy and research consulting projects with early childhood county-level and state-wide organizations, as well as in academia.  My consulting work bridges research, policy, and practice to improve early childhood quality and build early learning systems.

Available for:
Strategic Planning
Qualitative Research and Group Facilitation
Quantitative Research and Data Analysis
Literature Review and Writing
Program Evaluation
Policy Analysis
Advocacy and Outreach
Community Convening and Event Planning
Training and Technical Assistance

Current and past projects:
* Working with the San Francisco Child Care Planning and Advisory Council to gather & analyze data to write the updated 2017 Countywide Needs Assessment, collaborating across multiple public agencies and non-profits (SF Office of Early Care and Education, SF Human Services Agency, Children's Council SF Resource & Referral, First 5 San Francisco)
* Working with the California Coalition for Equity in Early Care and Education on grantwriting, policy analysis, group facilitation, community building, event planning, etc
* Working with the Stanford Early Learning Project to co-author early childhood teaching cases
* Completing a landscape analysis of the early childhood advocacy initiatives regionally in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as state-wide efforts
* Supported local organizations to convene an early childhood STEM forum
* Edited the design and content of an early childhood workforce survey
* Organized an early childhood edtech panel with SF EdTechWomen focusing on adult-facing technology to reduce administrative burden and encourage high-quality adult-child interactions

I'm now finished with my mid-career Ed.M. degree in Education Policy and Management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.  Can't believe how quickly this year went by!  So glad for all that I have learned in and out of class, for the many fascinating colleagues I've been able to grow with this year, and also for the fun we've had along the way.

Over the last year, I've been able to be a part of many amazing student organizations and courses...
* Founder of the HGSE Early Childhood Student Group; maintained list of over 150 students to connect them with opportunities; organized multiple events, including informal get-togethers, an Early Math Research workshop, and two Design Thinking for Early Childhood Innovation workshops for over seventy participants; and consulted with the HGSE Development Office

* Officer of Academic Affairs for the HGSE Student Council; organized twenty get-togethers for students & professors and two evenings of EdTalks with twenty-three students sharing their new educational initiatives and ideas, as well as conducting surveys of student needs and supporting my committee in organizing additional student-run events

* Logistics and Sponsorship Chair for the HGSE Student Research Conference; fundraised over $5000 to provide more research resources for students; collaborated with facilities and catering for over 130 research projects & over 300 participants; and ran registration, including managing the creation, ordering, and distribution of name badges & promotion materials

Related early childhood research, policy, and management course projects:
* Generating & Using Evidence in Organizations with Prof Julie Boatright Wilson- Worked for the HGSE Associate Dean of Learning & Teaching to evaluate the implementation of HGSE non-credit Special Topics Workshops, gathering qualitative & quantitative measures through interviews, focus groups, & surveys; analyzing the data; and making change recommendations
* Science-Based Innovation in Early Childhood Policy & Practice with Prof Jack Shonkoff- Researched and drafted an intervention using design thinking with new parents
* Program Evaluation with Prof Tom Kane- Outlined a long-term difference-in-differences evaluation of the NYC Universal PreK expansion
* Teacher and Teaching Quality with Prof Erica Litke- Wrote a research proposal to explore preschool teachers' math content knowledge
* Science of Behavior Change with Prof Todd Rogers- Designed a nudge for the Sesame Street Go app to encourage parent-child interaction
* Multi-Level Modeling with Prof Luke Miratrix- Used hierarchical linear models to investigate parent stress & early math using ECLS-K 2011 in R
* Structural Equation Modeling with Prof Dana McCoy- Used EFA/CFA & mediation to investigate parent activities & child outcomes using Stata

Other coursework:
* Analytic Frameworks for Policy - HKS class with Prof Richard Zeckhauser

I had a great time at the Massachusetts Association for the Education of Young Children's Spring Conference yesterday.  Glad for the connections I made in the Transforming Program Quality through Intentional Leadership session.  And also glad to have been able to talk with teachers and directors about the importance of math talk in the early childhood classroom.  I've uploaded the handout below.

Also here are links to some of the other resources from the handouts...

While speaking at the NAEYC Annual Conference this past week, I was interviewed by Ready Rosie about the importance of early math talk.  Ready Rosie creates videos for parents that show fun ways to interact with their young children - and I'm happy to see that Ready Rosie is incorporating early math interactions as well as early language and literacy interactions into their apps.    http://readyrosie.com/

Just led a packed workshop with over 120 people at the National Association for the Education of Young Children's 2015 Annual Conference in Florida.  When early childhood teachers can see themselves as problem solvers and mathematicians, they are able to help their students see themselves as problem solvers and mathematicians.

Here are the handouts as well as the slides that so many participants were trying to take quick phone photos of...

Away I Go to the Harvard Graduate School of Education!

Time for another life update!  Lots of change in last 14 months and lots more changes coming in the next 14 months!  :-)

It's been about a year since I sold my business in Los Angeles.  In the past 12 months, I've been taking online classes through Harvard Extension and traveling a lot to spend time with people I love (family & friends).  It's been a fun year of learning - and trying to figure out where I'm headed next...

While the online courses have been wonderful for flexibility, I've been missing the in-person interaction with professors and other students.  And I want to make stronger connections with people working in education policy and implementation, especially in early learning.  So for the next year, I will be...

In Boston/Cambridge - getting a masters in education policy and management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education!  :-)  https://www.gse.harvard.edu/masters/epm

Currently I'm a bit overwhelmed with figuring out a cross-country move in less than two months, but overall I'm extremely excited for everything I'll be doing next school year.  Taking classes about organizational leadership and impact evaluation at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.  Cross-registering for classes at the Kennedy School and HBS.  Organizing an early childhood student group.  Designing an independent study for myself looking at early education systems and universal preschool policy.  Doing an internship with a Massachusetts early learning initiative.  And of course, some fun, non-education things too... Kayaking on the Charles river.  Going to groupmuses.  Figuring out how to stay warm through the winter...  :-)

After a year plus of being fairly nomadic, it's kinda weird to think that I'll be mostly in the same place for a year.  It will be nice to not be living out of a suitcase - but I'll miss being able to see everyone!  I'm planning two going-away get-togethers (LA & SF) in May - and I definitely want to stay in touch over the next year with people through Skype and other means.
